July 10, 2010 09:00 pm | Updated 09:00 pm IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

The Kudumbasree Mission has been steering a silent revolution for the uplift and welfare of the economically weaker sections of society, Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said here on Saturday.

Mr. Chandy was inaugurating a community centre complex and the 12th anniversary celebrations of the mission's activities in Peringara panchayat in Thiruvalla taluk.

He said the State government had entrusted the mission with the task of implementing schemes aimed at helping people struggling hard for a living. More development schemes should be implemented through the mission.

P.J. Kurien, MP, inaugurated a conference hall at the community centre complex. Eliyamma Thomas, panchayat president, presided.

Mathew T. Thomas, MLA; Jolly Eapen, Pulikeezh block panchayat president; Bibu V. Eapen and Pramod Elamon, grama panchayat members; and Sam Eapen, president, Upper Kuttanad Nelkarshaka Samithi (paddy farmers' committee), spoke.

Decries violence

Earlier, Mr. Chandy visited the house of Robin Parumala, president of Kerala Students' Union district unit, which was allegedly attacked by miscreants at Parumala two days ago.

He said attacking houses and assaulting elderly people living in them in the name of political differences were wrong practices in a democratic country.

Satheesh Kochuparambil, vice-president of the District Congress Committee, accompanied Mr. Chandy to Parumala.

Later, Ramesh Chennithala, president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, visited the house.
