The private bus operators' unions decided to call off the proposed indefinite bus strike, called in protest against reported attacks on private buses in the district, following a meeting convened by the district administration here on Tuesday.

Buses had come under attack at the Mayyil and Kambil, areas where tension prevailed due to clashes between Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Indian Union Muslim League workers. The strike was called by the Bus Operators' Association Coordination Committee (BOACC).

The meeting evaluated that the attacks were serious and condemned it. District Police Chief Rahul R. Nair told the meeting that stringent action would be taken against those who attacked buses. The government should provide compensation to bus operators who had incurred losses in the attacks, the meeting said.

Mr. Sudhakaran said he would intervene to attract the government's attention to this demand.

BOACC chairman V.J. Sebastian announced the bus operators' decision to call off the strike in view of the assurances.

The meeting convened by Additional District Magistrate N.T. Mathew, officiating as District Collector, was attended by representatives of bus operators; K. Sudhakaran, MP; District Police Chief Rahul R. Nair; and Regional Transport Officer

P.P. Babu. Bus operators were represented by C.V. Faisal and K. Velayudhan. Bus workers were represented by K.P. Sahadevan, T. Krishnan, and Thavam Balakrishnan.
