Bid to cover up splitin LDF: Chennithala

February 10, 2017 08:30 pm | Updated 08:30 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala has termed CPI(M) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s observations about Kerala Law Academy Law College stir an attempt to cover up the deep divide in the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).

In a statement here on Friday, Mr. Chennithala said Mr. Balakrishnan was also trying to hide the embarrassment now that the people have seen through the games played by his party to subvert the student stir.

Contrary to his statement, it was the CPI(M) that had helped the BJP by not trying to bring the stir to a negotiated settlement. The stir was launched by KSU. Others, including the BJP, came on the scene only later. Then how would it become a BJP-sponsored agitation.

When the SFI withdrew from the strike, former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan had rejected the agreement it had reached with the college management and asserted that issues still remained unresolved. Does this mean that Mr. Achuthanandan had also fallen into the trap set by the BJP? the Opposition Leader asked.

Mr. Chennithala pointed out that the CPI’s Revenue Minister had ordered an investigation into misuse of government land by the college management based on Mr. Achuthanandan’s complaint. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s attempt then was to block the investigation. The Education Minister finally tried for a resolution only out of fear for public ire. The LDF had become shaky and Mr. Balakrishnan’s attempt was to cover it up, he said.
