The State government has decided to open 50 animal birth control (ABC) centres in government veterinary hospitals.
In a letter to Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) Chairman, Animal Husbandry Department Director S. Chandrankutty said Kerala government had decided to speed up the ABC programme through the Local Self-Government Department with the help of the Department of Animal Husbandry.
Each ABC centre had been allotted two veterinarians, two paravets and two dog handlers apart from their regular staff. More dog catchers would be hired by local bodies.
The AWBI had asked the Animal Husbandry Department to expedite the ABC programme in the State. It was asked to train veterinarians for programme and to procure sufficient caravans to transport street dogs.
Mr. Chandrankutty requested the AWBI to assign an organisation specialising in birth control surgeries in canines for an intensive training for vets, paravets, handlers and catchers in Kerala.
The trainers can also suggest some low-cost modifications in the current infrastructure of the veterinary hospitals to make them suitable for carrying out the ABC programme, he said.
