Leptospirosis and dengue fever cases have been reported from the flood-hit areas in Pathanamthitta.

District Medical Officer (DMO) A.L. Sheeja told The Hindu that 38 clinically confirmed cases of leptospirosis had been reported in the district as on Tuesday afternoon. This was besides the 33 suspected cases of leptospirosis, she said.

According to Dr. Sheeja, one person had died of leptospirosis.

Two other deaths reported from the district in the past 24 hours were suspected leptospirosis casualties.

She said five clinically confirmed and four suspected cases of dengue fever were reported from the district on Tuesday.

Incidence of leptospirosis had been found mostly from the flood-ravaged Ranni, Chathankary Kanjeettukara, Pandalam and Elanthoor areas.

The dengue cases were reported from Vallana, near Aranmula, Pathanamthitta municipal limits, and Ranni, she said.

The DMO said the Health Department had deployed two volunteers for every 100 households to conduct house visits as part of its epidemic prevention and control programme.

House visits

Dr. Sheeja said volunteers would conduct house visits twice every week and promptly report the cases of fever as well as water-borne diseases, if any, to the primary or community health centre concerned.

She said that the huge waste materials left by the floods were a grave concern in the worst-hit areas of Ranni.
