A big quantity of rice meant to be distributed through ration shops in Thiruvananthapuram district was seized from a lorry by the Chavara police on Wednesday.
The lorry, on its way to Kaladi, was intercepted National Highway at the Titanium junction, near Chavara, based on a tip off received by City Police Commissioner P. Prakash.
Sub inspector G. Gopakumar said that 360 sacks of rice were seized from the lorry. The lorry was rented by two Aluva-based men for transporting the rice during a return trip from Thiruvananthapuram. The driver was misguided with bogus documents showing that the consignment was billed.
During interrogation, the driver said the rice was loaded from a godown at Palode. Mr. Gopakuamar said that at the Palode godown, the rice was repacked as branded rice and meant to be taken to a rice mill at Kaladi. The lorry had also been taken into custody, he said.
Circle inspector Binu Sreedhar said a team from the Karunagapally taluk supply office inspected the seized consignment and confirmed that it was PDS rice. The police had informed the District Collector about the seizure.
