Three Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] workers were injured in an explosion at Pottanpara under the Kathirur police station limits here late on Sunday night.

The police said that the blast occurred while they were making country bombs near an Anganwadi building at Pottanpara, near Panunda, here. The injured have been identified as party workers Jithin, Athul and Jeevan, all aged 18. Jithin’s palms were severed in the blast, the police said adding that he was now undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Kochi.

The police said that the local residents heard a loud blast at around 11 p.m. They thought that it was fireworks display in connection with a local cultural programme. The police was informed of the incident on Monday morning.

Initially, the police could not locate the exact spot where the explosion took place. Pottanpara is a CPI(M) stronghold.
