1,500 ‘green ward sabhas’ in Kannur next month

Haritha Keralam initiative to create public awareness

As part of the plan to create public awareness about environmental rules and to make wards in local bodies totally garbage-free, 1,500 ‘green ward sabhas’ will be convened in October under the initiative of the Haritha Keralam Mission (HKM).

HKM district officials said campaign activities for mobilising participation in the green ward sabhas in the district were under way.

The ward-level meetings were being organised in association with various government departments and the Mission, they added.

The green ward sabhas, to be held from October 2 to 10, are being convened under the aegis of respective local bodies.

The objective of holding the meetings was to create awareness of various green rules and to allow people to explore ways to transform their wards into garbage-free wards, said the officials.

Biowaste management

The ward-level sessions will discuss measures to ensure setting up of a biowaste management mechanism in each household, transfer of non-biodegradable waste to centralised collection centres, enforcement measures including imposition of fine on people who do not comply with the green rules, plan to convert fallow land to cultivable land and action plans for water conservation activities, among others.

Green protocol

According to the HKM district mission, the ward-level sessions will take decisions including those for strict compliance with the green protocol by organisers of public events, marriages and festivals.

A total of 750 volunteers will be roped in to help the activities of the green gram sabhas. The training programme for them will be held here on September 2, 3, 4 and 7.

The HKM officials said the local bodies would also convene meetings of traders, caterers and managers of auditoriums.
