₹1,411-crore loss in Wayanad district

LSG, Public Works departments suffer the most

The Wayanad District Planning Board on Friday pegged the loss owing to the floods and landslips in the hill district at ₹1,411 crore.

Maximum damage was incurred to Local Self Government (LSG) and Public Works Departments in the natural calamities reported since August 8, District Planning Officer K.M. Suresh told The Hindu .

Damage to roads

The Public Works Department suffered a loss of ₹73,675.85 lakh, including a loss of ₹287.85 to the building section and ₹73,388 lakh to the road section of the department, Mr. Suresh said.

Close to 651 km of road and nine bridges of the department were destroyed in the floods.

While the Local Self Government Department had incurred loss to the tune of ₹1,047.50 lakh, including a loss of ₹17,850.80 lakh owing to the damage of 1078.17 km of roads and ₹4,409 lakh owing to the destruction of 621 buildings under the department, he said.

The flood also destroyed a 19-km stretch of the Kozhikode -Kollegal National Highway 212.

The loss to other sectors is calculated as follows:

Agriculture: ₹33,144 lakh; Animal Husbandry and Dairy: ₹1,190.50 lakh; Fisheries ₹534.45 lakh; Forests: ₹648.16 lakh; Tribal Development: ₹1,455.50 lakh; Education: ₹90.26 lakh; Industry: ₹326.04 lakh; Cooperative sector: ₹107.89 lakh; Police: ₹36.28 lakh; Labour: ₹134.73 lakh; KSEB: ₹250.99 lakh; Kudumbasree: ₹52 lakh; Akshaya Kendra: ₹0.80 lakh; Kerala Water Authority: ₹379.50 lakh; Minor Irrigation: ₹1,027.80 lakh; Karapuzha Irrigation Project: ₹626.50 lakh; Public Distribution: ₹7.82 lakh; Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd: ₹25.45 lakh; Tourism: ₹461.99 lakh; Banks:₹ 84.99 lakh; and Fire and Rescue Services: ₹182 lakh.
