125th birth anniversary fete of freedom fighter

May 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - Palakkad:

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president N. Peethambara Kurup on Thursday said freedom fighter T.R. Krishnaswamy Iyer was an eminent political activist who built up the Congress movement in Malabar despite heavy odds.

Inaugurating the year-long 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Krishnaswamy Iyer at a function here, Mr. Kurup said fond memories of him would help the party overcome its present crisis and win back the clout it once enjoyed in Palakkad.

Mr. Kurup said Krishnaswamy Iyer strode the entire British Malabar as a colossus and led several social reformation movements ignoring threats from his own community. Before the function, Congress leaders offered floral tributes to the leader at his statue located inside T.R. Krishnaswamy Park near Government Moyans School.
