D. Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Development Corporation Ltd. has proposed to launch a new scheme — the Yuva Shakti — to empower rural youth and make them self-reliant.
Announcing this on Thursday, chairperson of the corporation M. Ramchandrappa said the new scheme will be on the lines of the existing ‘Stree Shakti’ programme. The corporation estimates the new scheme may require over Rs. 250 crore, and is seeking an increased allocation of Rs. 1,000 crore in the next budget. The present allocation is Rs. 134 crore.
Higher allocation sought“I have already discussed this proposal with the Chief Minister and requested for a higher allocation. He has asked me to submit the proposal,” Mr. Ramchandrappa said.
Under the proposed scheme, Yuva Shakti groups, comprising 10 to 15 youth, will be formed at the village-level. These groups will be engaged in local income-generating activities.
“We will give them loans ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh, based on the work they propose to undertake,” he said.
The aim is to ensure that each member of the group earns a minimum of Rs. 5,000 a month in the village. This will also check migration of rural youth to urban areas in search of a job, he said.
