A 25-year-old person has been arrested on charges of murdering two elderly people in Beladhara in Tumakuru taluk and district.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Superintendent of Police, Karthik Reddy said that the accused Hemanth Kumar was arrested in connection with the double murder case. He is the native of Seegepalya in Koratagere taluk in the district.

He dug a borewell in his village for agricultural activities but he did not get water. He had taken loan from private lenders to dig the borewell but when it failed, he could not repay the loan and started to drink which only aggravated his problems.

Hemanth Kumar, who is the distant relative of the old couple Gangadharaiah (80) and Ganagamma(75) of Beladhara came to their house two months back and learnt that the couple had cash and jewellery. He planned to rob the gold jewellery and cash from their house and repay his loan.

On June 7, he visited their house and at around 1.30 a.m. on June 8, he allegedly killed them with lethal weapons and took away cash, gold jewellery and silver articles worth Rs.1.5 lakh.
