Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav, who began the inter-State Samvedana Yatra from here on Friday, said though 40 per cent of farmers were suffering owing to severe drought across the country, neither the Union government nor the State government was taking the issue seriously to prevent farmers’ suicide.
Mr. Yadav said he had decided to start the yatra from Karnataka, particularly this village, where many farmers had migrated to big cities to search jobs because of drought.
The yatra will conclude in Haryana after passing through Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where a valedictory programme is scheduled on October 15. Mr. Yadav said during the yatra, he would talk with distressed farmers, visit fields where crops were damaged due to drought and hold discussions.
