Siddaramaiah sees pattern in bypoll results in the country

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah has predicted the defeat of the Congress and JD(S) “rebels” in the upcoming byelections, going by the pattern of several leaders who switched over to the BJP losing bypolls in Gujarat and other States. A similar defeat in Karnataka will result in the resignation of Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, he said on Thursday.

OBC leader and BJP candidate Alpesh Thakor, who defected from the Congress, lost the byelection in Radhanpur Assembly seat in Gujarat on Thursday. Raghubhai Desai of the Congress defeated him.

The former Chief Minister noted that several leaders who hopped to the BJP had lost in the Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly polls as well. All “rebel” Congress and JD(S) legislators, who have been disqualified, would meet a similar fate in Karnataka if they contest the byelection on the BJP ticket, he said.

At a press conference here, Mr. Siddaramaiah said people would ensure the defeat of the defectors. “The Congress will win a majority of seats in the bypolls scheduled for December 5 and this will reduce the BJP government to minority and lead to the resignation of Mr. Yediyurappa,” he claimed.

The Congress leader said the results of the Haryana and Maharashtra Assembly elections indicate that people had lost faith in the BJP.

On the poll outcome, Mr. Siddaramaiah tweeted: “Election results of Maharashtra & Haryana have given strength to Congress after the Lok Sabha elections. My heartfelt thanks to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for motivating party workers during the difficult times”.

The Congress won two seats where Mr. Siddaramaiah had campaigned for party candidates in Maharashtra — Jat and Akkalkot .

KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao tweeted, “Be it Alpesh Thakor or Udayanraje Bhosale, nearly all the turncoats who cheated the electorate and their party by joining the BJP have been defeated.” He said that atrupta (rebel) MLAs of Karnataka will soon meet a similar fate.

Mr. Rao said, “Despite huge media backing, misuse of government agencies to threaten Congress leaders, massive funding, frenetic campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah,” the results in Maharashtra and Haryana show that the BJP was losing ground.
