The process of seventh economic census was launched in Karnataka on Wednesday with authorities eliciting data from Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa.

The economic census, which will focus on business enterprises both in organised and unorganised sectors and details related to their labour force, will be conducted from November 14, 2019, to March 20, 2020. It will cover 54,96,473 families in urban areas and 82,24,143 families in rural areas.

Launching the census, Mr. Yediyurappa explained that the exercise would serve as a basis for the formulation of various schemes of the Union and State governments. This would also help in understanding different businesses and their workforce, he noted. For the first time, the census is being conducted through a mobile app, he said.

The census is being conducted by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation along with the Directorate of Economics and Statistics of the State government.

It will throw up information related to enterprises including those related under various legislations. Also, it is one of the sources for knowing details related to workers in these enterprises. The Economic Census has also helped in understanding the diversity of non- farm economic activities in the country.
