A 27-year-old widow was abducted, assaulted and threatened, allegedly by a local politician and his associates for reportedly fleeing from the farm/brick kiln where she had been working as a bonded labour, in Bekkalale village, near Maddur, on Thursday morning.

The victim’s husband Chinnathambi, a native of Tamil Nadu, had taken a loan of ₹50,000 from Kuduragundi Nagesh, the main accused, a former president of Maddur APMC, a few years ago. Mr. Chinnathambi died and his wife was forced to work at Nagesh’s place till the loan was paid. She had been working there for four years, and recently fled from the farm, the police said. Nagesh and his associates went to Bekkalale, where she was hiding with her two children, and abducted her in a car, said the police. Some bystanders recorded the incident on video and shared the clipping with the local police. “We traced the victim, rescued her and arrested Nagesh,” C. Mallik, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Malavalli Subdivision, told The Hindu .
