The alleged incident of “kidney sale to bribe a revenue official”, which hit headlines recently, took a new twist here on Saturday with Chikkatayamma (55) giving a different version to the Upalokayukta Subash B. Adi.

The woman from Kalisiddanahundi, near Srirangapatna, recently alleged that she sold one of her kidneys in Bengaluru to bribe a revenue official. Mr. Adi and a few officials visited the district on Saturday to conduct an inquiry. The Upalokayukta verified some documents pertaining to a piece of land of Ms. Chikkatayamma and also interacted with her.

Later, Mr. Adi spoke to presspersons. “It is true that she [Ms. Chikkathayamma] sold one of her kidneys. But, the purpose of selling it was not to bribe the revenue official,” the Upalokayukta said.

Poverty had prompted her to sell her organ. However, she stated that revenue inspector Doddaiah had been delaying to set right her land records, he said.

Transfer

Mr. Adi instructed Mr. Nagabhushan and other officials to take steps to set right her land records. He also said that he would recommend the State government to transfer those revenue officials who have been serving at a place for more than five years immediately. Replying to a query, the Upalokayukta said, “Ms. Chikkatayamma has no details about the hospital where the organ transplantation was done or to whom she sold [the kidney].”
