The wild tusker that strayed from Tamil Nadu to an area near the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajnagar where it attacked two persons on Tuesday, was finally captured on Thursday. The tusker had also gored to death two cows.

Though the elephant had a radio collar, it was untraceable.

After two days of extensive combing operations, it was spotted in a farm at Talagattipura-Ingalawadi area, about 15 km from Gundlupet town. The Forest Department team, along with four trained elephants led by Abhimanyu, rushed to the spot and successfully tranquilized the animal.

It took around 45 minutes to one hour for the team to get close to the tusker. The trained elephants then surrounded it. It was bound with thick ropes and led to the nearest road where it was safely mounted onto a truck and shifted to Dubare elephant camp near Kushalnagar in Kodagu. The radio collar that was around the jumbo’s neck was removed after its capture.

Bandipur Tiger Reserve Director T. Balachandra supervised the operation.

Nagaraj, senior forest veterinarian, who was also part of the operation, said, “Locals alerted us on sighting the jumbo and we rushed four elephants to capture it. The operation was carried out without any hurdles.”

The capture has brought relief to the villagers, who were watching the operation from a distance.

The wild tusker was first captured in Dharmapuri after it was involved in several incidents in Tamil Nadu. It was radio-collared and released into the Madhumalai forests. But the T.N. authorities lost contact with it when there was a glitch in the battery of the radio collar.
