Though Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) had tweaked its carry-over system for the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) students in September this year, students are now demanding that the university further relax the rule. Several students staged a protest on Wednesday in this regard.
According to the new rule, engineering students no longer have to clear all first year examinations to enter the third year. However, they cannot have more than four backlogs (failed papers) to enter the third year. The backlogs include both theory and practical examinations. Now, students are demanding that they should be allowed to enter the third year even if they have more than four backlogs.
“It is up to us to decide how we clear all the papers. The university should allow us to carry over more than four papers,” said a final year engineering student from a city-based college.
The students, demanding that the university authorities intervene and look into the matter, have also given representations to several officials of the Higher Education Department, including Higher Education Minister G.T. Deve Gowda.
‘Will impact quality’
The university authorities have however refused to relent and entertain their pleas. H.N. Jagannatha Reddy, Registrar (Evaluation) of VTU, said the university could not allow any more leniency.
Another official of the university said, “Even in September when we changed the rule, some of us were against the move as we felt that this would have an impact on the quality of education. How can students move to higher semesters without knowing basic concepts. The university should ensure that this relaxation is not given to students.”
