Farmers from Mansur and Sannsomapur located on the outskirts of the city have urged the district administration to contain the pig menace in their villages.

The villagers, who staged a protest demonstration here on Thursday, alleged that the police and other officials concerned have not taken action against pig rearers despite several complaints. They said that the pigs were damaging crops and displayed samples of damaged sugarcane and jowar.

The villagers said that fearing pig clearance drive by the municipal corporation, pig rearers have transported pigs to their villages and over 1,000 of them were released recently. These pigs have started destroying crops, they added.

In the last three years, due to drought, farmers could not grow anything in their fields. This season, the rain was good and hence, farmers had grown jowar and sugarcane, among other crops. However, these pigs have destroyed the crops, they said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim Maigur asked them to sort out the matter with the gram panchayat but the villagers said that the gram panchayat officials were reluctant to take action and urged the district administration to intervene.
