It has been started at Begum talab; plans are afoot to create more facilities

Boating facility finally got launched at the Begum talab in the city on Friday.

This was a pending demand for a long time. Though the decision was taken to start the facility at the moat behind the Gagan Mahal, but there were objections by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Begum talab is also larger compared to the moat and the area is also being developed to create other facilities such as a walking track, a playground for children, a park, a yoga centre, and food courts.

The talab also has adequate water from the Almatti dam and is suitable for boating.

Speaking to The Hindu, Chandbasha Kutti, proprietor of ‘Fly Catcher’, the agency that has taken the contract for the faciltity, said they have deployed four trained guides to operate four rafts, two motor boats and eight kayaks.

“We have fixed the fare as ₹50, ₹100, and ₹150 for each ride based on the boat. Each ride lasts around 30 minutes,” he said.

Mr. Kutti said that the Department of Tourism is giving publicity related to this facility to attract more visitors.

Expressing happiness over the facility, Sarfaraz Kandgal said that it was required as the city lacks such recreational facilities for family outing.

“The government should develop good connecting roads, clean some bushes and make the area look attractive,” he said.
