Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University urged to reject UGC proposal on Hindi

Condemning the Union government’s attempt to “impose Hindi” on students across the country, Karnataka Navanirmana Sene has urged Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ballari, to reject the circular issued by the University Grants Commission asking its suggestions on the proposal to make Hindi a mandatory language at the undergraduate level.

A delegation led by Sene State convenor Vijayakumar Kavalur and Koppal unit president Purkhan Ahmed met the university authorities on Monday and demanded that they reject the circular as a whole.

“Imposing Hindi on non-Hindi speakers is an undemocratic move. It is a conspiracy to kill regional languages, particularly the Dravidian languages in south India. The Union government had conspired to impose Hindi in primary schools. But it had to step back owing to the resistance by Kannada organisations in the State,” they said.

“Now, under the directions of the Human Resource Development Ministry, the UGC has issued a circular asking universities their opinion on a proposal to make Hindi a mandatory subject at the undergraduate level. It is another attempt to impose Hindi over regional languages. The university should, under no circumstance, accept the proposal,” the activists said.

Hailing Kannada as one of the oldest and richest languages in the world, with a history of more than 2,000 years, they held that the Union government has been attempting to impose Hindi by wrongly propagating it as the national language. They also said holding one language over others would adversely affect the nation’s federal system.

“India is a multilingual and multi-cultural country. It has a federal political system where all languages enjoy equal status. The need of the hour is that all non-Hindi speakers oppose the Union government’s move,” the duo said.

They then submitted a memorandum on the matter to the university registrar.
