Vigilance committees to keep tab on private colleges

June 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - DAVANGERE:

Deputy Commissioner S.T. Anjankumar has said that three separate vigilance teams have been formed to keep a tab on the collection of heavy donations and fees by private colleges in the district and the district administration would act against college managements based on the teams’ reports.

Speaking at a meeting of officers and private college managements here on Wednesday, he said that vigilance teams would verify whether colleges followed norms while giving admissions, the fees structure, donations and seats allotted to students as per rules.

The teams would start functioning in a day or two and submit a detailed report in a fortnight.

The teams have been formed based on allegations by organisations that private colleges in the district have flouted norms while allotting seats and have also collected heavy donations.

The organisations had also alleged that the colleges had not put the fees structure on notice board and advertisements hoardings of the colleges which is mandatory.

Shikshana Hakku Horata Samithi president B.M. Satish said that it was essential to initiate action against the college collecting heavy donations as parents are facing a lot of problems and the entire education sector is being commercialised by these vested interests.

He also alleged that private colleges never use Kannada in their advertisements, so they should be given clear instructions for the same, he added.

Mr. Satish also alleged that there were no labs and other facilities in some private colleges and students were deprived of practical lessons, so action should be initiated against such colleges also.
