Urdu desk to be set up at Information Department

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday announced that the State government would set up an Urdu desk at the Information Department for the benefit of Urdu newspapers.

Participating in the golden jubilee celebrations of Urdu newspaper Daily Salar here, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the government would also consider Urdu publications for the Karnataka Rayotsava award.

He hailed Daily Salar for its services pertaining to the cause of national spirit and secularism in the last five decades.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-President M. Hamid Ansari observed that Urdu newspapers had worldwide circulation.

Showering rich praises on the language, he said research on Urdu was going on even in universities in the U.S., Germany and Canada.

He stressed the need to protect and nurture Urdu.

Governor Vajubhai R. Vala also spoke.
