January 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - HUBBALLI:

The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) will soon appoint urban designers to advise the civic body on the development of lakes, parks, and other infrastructure projects for the twin cities.

Replying to a discussion on a starred question by Janata Dal (Secular) member Rajanna Koravi on the plight of the water bodies in the twin cities at the general body meeting of the corporation council here on Wednesday, HDMC Commissioner Noor Mansur said that the process to appoint them had begun. The municipal commissioner said that the corporation had initiated the process to identify and demarcate the water bodies and parks in the twin cities. The municipal commissioner said that as per official records, there were 27 lakes in the twin cities. However. Mr. Koravi maintained that there were over 60 small and big water bodies in and around the twin cities.

Mr. Noor Mansur clarified that a survey on the extent of encroachment over tanks and lakes was under way and the report would be placed before the council soon.
