January 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - KALABURAGI:

The former member of the UGC and educationist M.I. Savadatti said that universities and colleges have the responsibility to improve the quality of education in colleges and other centres of education. Delivering the keynote address at a workshop on education and development in the Hyderabad-Karnataka regionin Kalaburagi on Sunday, Prof. Savadatti said that the quality of education imparted in the lower levels in schools and colleges was not up to the mark.

Prof. Savadatti said, “We cannot depend on the government to improve the situation and help in improving the quality of education at the lower level. The universities and colleges should establish a backward link with colleges and schools to contribute to the improvement of quality of education”.

He said that the teachers should volunteer for this noble cause of upgrading the quality of education in the lower levels.

“If the students coming out of the schools and colleges were sub-standard, how can they academically excel in the higher centres of education?”Prof. Savadatti questioned.

Prof. Savadatti said that there is a need for adopting an integrated approach to solve the problem faced in higher education.

The universities and colleges should stretch backwards to fill the gaps in teaching methodologies, he said.

He said that every student should be equipped with good soft skills apart from academic qualification. Rajya Sabha MP Basavaraj Patil Sedam, who inaugurated the workshop, said that the lack of commitment among teachers at the lower levels was the main reason for the present situation. There was need for change in attitude among teachers.

He said that the people should also come out of the hope that the provisions of the article 371 (J) would solve all the problems faced by the people of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture Sciences, Raichur, Prakash S. Salimath made a presentation on the role of the Agriculture University in the development of the region.
