Union Mnister V.K. Singh’s remarks draw condemnation

Activists of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SCs and STs) wing of the Shivamogga District Congress Committee (SDCC) staged a protest here on Wednesday, condemning the recent statements of Union Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh on the killing of two Dalit children at Faridabad.

Addressing the protest meet, Pallavi, district unit president of the SCs and STs wing of SDCC, said that the statements of Mr. Singh were inhuman and the civil society should condemn them in strong words. It was unfortunate that while reacting to the killing of Dalit children at Faridabad and a similar incident that took place in Haryana a few days ago, Mr. Singh had reportedly said that if someone threw a stone at a dog, then the government could not be blamed for that. These statements were casteist in tone and they reflected the prejudiced views that Mr. Singh had towards the oppressed communities, she said. She alleged that the incidents of atrocities on SCs and STs had increased after Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance came to power at the Centre. She urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Mr. Singh from the Ministry for the irresponsible manner in which the later had reacted to the incident.

The protesters submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner in this regard.

Functionaries of the Congress Tangaraj, Chinnappa and Kumaraswamy took part in the protest.
