Union Minister moots river linking

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers H.N. Ananth Kumar has favoured the linking of rivers to address issues like drought and water scarcity.

Speaking at the 17th death anniversary of Sri Channabasava Pattaddevaru and Pattadhikar Mahotsav of Guru Basava Devaru in Bhalki Hiremath on Thursday, the BJP leader said linking of rivers across Karnataka would create a water grid that would end drought and ensure constant supply of water to all regions.

Andhra Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has successfully linked Krishna and Godavari to transfer 80 tmcft of water from the Krishna basin to the Godavari basin, bringing water to dry areas. Such models should be replicated in Karnataka too, he said and added that he would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to approve such a project if the state government were to forward it.

He observed that 136 taluks in the state were reeling under drought. He added that BJP MPs and legislators from the state were ready to contribute one-month salary towards drought relief.

He urged the government to supply tankers to the 337 villages suffering from water scarcity in Bidar district. He said such emergencies demanded that all leaders worked for the welfare of the people, setting aside their political affiliations.
