One of the two undertrials who escaped from the Bellary Central Jail on November 1 has been arrested.

According to the police, who had set up a special team to arrest the two, Rebanna (23) was arrested from his cousin’s house in Dindwar village in Bijapur district.

They also arrested his cousin Shivappa for harbouring Rebanna.

Both were produced in court on Thursday, and have been remanded in judicial custody. On November 1, Rebanna, along with Ayyalappa (22), broke the windowpane of Block 5 D, where they were lodged, and escaped from the jail by scaling the 12-foot outer wall by tying up several bedsheets and lungis.

The two, native of Gondgi village in Sindagi taluk of Bijapur district, were among the eight arrested on the charges of murdering two persons and stealing their vehicles.

They were lodged in the Bellary prison a year ago. Of the eight, three are out on bail. The police are on the lookout for Ayyalappa.

Five members of the jail staff, including the jailor on duty when the jail break occurred, were suspended for dereliction of duty.
