More writers, rather than politicians, should be involved: Deshpande

District in-charge Minister R.V. Deshpande visited the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), the venue of the 84th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan here, and inspected the arrangements on Wednesday.

Mayor Sudhir Saraf, MLAs Arvind Bellad, Prasad Abbayya, Deputy Commissioner M. Deepa, Police Commissioner M.N. Nagaraj, Superintendent of Police G. Sangeeta, and tahsildar Prakash Kudari accompanied the Minister.

Mr. Deshpande said this is a literary programme and hence, more writers should be involved rather than politicians. There should not be any shortcomings from the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) and the district administration to literary lovers coming from all parts of the State. Everyone should strive to make it a memorable event, he said. The administration has to hire the best acoustics as it plays a vital role in the success of the programme. High capacity power generators too should be installed during power-cuts. The district administration has already started a campaign on making this a plastic-free event. Hence, all stakeholders should join hands to meet its success, he said.

Seating arrangement for 50,000 people will be made at the main stage and a huge pandal is being erected. This work is expected to be completed by December 28. The food committee headed by Mr. Bellad has finalised the menu and the committee has been given direction to maintain cleanliness at the food counters and open kitchen.

This apart, a publicity drive should be conducted. To provide accommodation to thousands of people, rooms in hotels have been booked and kalyan mantaps too have been hired. As more number of participants will be sheltered at the kalyan mantaps, mobile toilets and bathrooms will be installed, he said.

On the release of grants, Mr. Deshpande said the government has released ₹8 crore in two phases and if more funds are needed, it is ready to help KSP. It is a welcome development that some organisations and companies have come forward voluntarily to support the sammelan, he said.
