A nearly two-month- old male infant fell prey to the menace of stray dogs here on Thursday evening. The baby was found dead in front of State Bank of India in Shivabasava Nagar under Malmaruti Police station limits.

Some people saw a dog trying to eat the baby and chased it away and they found that the baby, with several injuries on its body, was dead. They soon informed the police who shifted the body to the district government hospital.

Belagavi City Corporation Health Officer Nadagouda rushed to the hospital but could not confirm whether the dog picked up the baby alive or dead. The cause and the nature of the death would be known after the post-mortem.

He said the parents of the child are yet to be traced and no one had come forward to claim the baby. Looking at the condition of the baby, he suspected that it belonged to a poor family.

A case has been registered and the police have taken up investigation.
