Two more sexual assault cases were reported from Malur and Kolar, taking the number of such crimes in the district to seven in the last couple of weeks.

Residents caught and handed over Muniyappa, a youth, to the police when he attempted to sexually assault a girl in Kolaramma tank bed on Thursday. In another incident, a mentally ill girl was allegedly raped in Malur town on Thursday by Nagaraj, who was apprehended by residents after the incident.

Tension prevailed on the premises of the deputy commissioner’s office in Kolar on Friday as students broke the police barricades and barged onto the premises to stage a dharna against increasing sexual harassment in Kolar and across the State. They also demanded measures for the safety of girl students.

The protest was organised by various outfits, including Students’ Federation of India, Democratic Youth Federation of India, All-India Democratic Women’s Association and Vidyarthi-Yuva Hitarakshana Vedike.
