Two more farmers, who had debts to clear, allegedly ended their lives by hanging from the ceiling at their residences in Maddur taluk of the district in the wee hours of Thursday.

Whilst Channegowda (40) committed suicide at Malagaranahalli, Chikkonu ended his life in Thaggahalli. The duo had taken loans for managing agricultural operations and for personal reasons, Maddur police said.

Channegowda had around 1.5 acres of land and had been growing paddy and other crops. He was clueless on repaying loans to the tune of around Rs. 2 lakh. Hence, he took the extreme step, Channegowda’s relatives reportedly told the police.

Chikkondu, who owned three acres of land, had taken a loan of Rs. 4 lakh from banks and moneylenders, police said. According to his family, he committed suicide due to the outstanding dues. He had raised paddy, ragi and sugarcane at his fields. But, he lost his standing crops due to shortage of water.

On getting information, revenue and police officials visited the villages to gather information.

Since June this year, more than 65 farmers had committed suicide in Mandya district owing to the agrarian crisis.
