Two workers were killed and at least 40 were injured when a tractor carrying labour overturned near Javalagera village in Sindhanur taluk, about 75 km from here, on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Husain Basha, who died on the spot, and Veeresh who breathed his last while being rushed to a hospital in Ballari. The seriously injured were rushed to Vijaynagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Ballari, and Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences, Raichur. The injured included Kavita who recently passed her SSLC examination.

As per survivors’ accounts, two tractors were carrying over 40 workers each for works taken up under Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act in Javalagera Gram Panchayat limits.

One of the tractors slipped as the driver lost control and it rolled down to the 54th sub-distributory of the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal.

The injured were rushed to hospital in six government ambulances, a private ambulance and five private vehicles.
