Two attempt suicide after accusing Shettar’s brother of land-grab

Pradeep Shettar denies any role in the land purchase

October 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - HUBBALLI:

A woman and her son consumed poison in front of the office of the Hubballi Tahsildar at the Mini Vidhana Soudha here on Friday, after making a land-grab charge against Pradeep Shettar, brother of the former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar.

The woman and her son were among the members of the Sheikh family who are staging a protest there in support of their grievances.

Property grabbed

The Sheikh family members, who said that they had earlier complained to various authorities in the matter, alleged that Mr. Pradeep Shettar had, through his aides, grabbed their ancestral property on the pretext of getting a partition deed done for their property.

Shaheeda Sheikh and Jaffar Sab Sheikh consumed poison saying that they were forced to take the extreme step as no government authority was keen on helping them. The land is located at Tarihal on the outskirts of Hubballi.

Shaheeda Sheikh and Jaffar Sab Sheikh were immediately rushed to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, and according to hospital sources, their condition is said to be out of danger.

Speaking to presspersons at KIMS Hospital, Shaheeda Sheikh’s husband Allavalli and daughter Razia alleged that they had received threat calls from unknown persons after they started approaching various authorities seeking justice.

Allegations

They alleged that Mr. Pradeep Shettar was involved in the case and got the property registered in the names of his aides Viranna Savadi (former Mayor) and Harsha Patil.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Mr. Viranna Savadi clarified that Pradeep Shettar was nowhere concerned with the land deal which he (Mr. Savadi) and his partner, Mr. Harsha Patil, got registered in 2008.

Consideration

“We purchased the land by paying a consideration to land owner Baksarsab Sheikh and his legal heirs. Baksarsab died in 2012. I don’t know why they are complaining now. As Mr. Pradeep Shettar is preparing for the Council election, some vested interests are trying to defame him by dragging his name into the issue,” he said.

Mr. Savadi said that Mr. Harsha Patil and he would lodge a police complaint supported by all the legal documents and seek action against the woman for making false charges against them.

Mr. Pradeep Shettar, when contacted, ruled out any connection with the land deal. “I am in now way related to the land deal and I don’t know why they are making these charges against me,” he said.

The Suburban Police have registered a suo motu case against Shaheeda Sheikh for the suicide attempt under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code.

Pradeep Shettar’s name taken to defame him, as he is contesting the Council polls, says Viranna Savadi
