Mr. Babu, in his post, had said most people do not know the existence of track maintainers and they make news only through obituary columns.

He said track maintainers guard the steel rails; are vigilant as night-patrol men; keep watch on swelling waters under bridges; watch out for tree-fall on the track or debris fall ..., all to ensure safe passage of trains. Mr. Babu said often they trek up to 20 km carrying heavy tools on their back and get a break for every 5 km, and struggle hard to keep away sleep at the dead of night. They also brave wild animals, snakes etc., enroute even as umbrellas and raincoats become insufficient in the torrential rains.

Official promises action

The Southern Railway official said Railways has taken steps to reduce the weight of tools track maintainers carry and provide them backpacks. Measures to insulate them from electric shocks on electrified routes are also being taken, the official said .
