Three farmers commit suicide

Two farmers committed suicide in Hubballi and Ballari, respectively, on Friday night and Saturday. Another farmer, who was hospitalised after a suicide bid two days ago, died on Saturday.

According to the police, Basavaraddi B. Hulikatti (60) of Mukkal village of Kalghatagi taluk committed suicide by hanging himself on Friday night. He was in financial distress.

Hulikatti was worried over the loss of standing crops due to scanty rainfall. In a complaint, his wife, Shashikala, said that the deceased had taken Rs. 2 lakh as loan from a cooperative organisation. Kalghatagi police have registered the case and investigation is on.

In Ballari, Kanavihalli Mallamma (55), a woman farmer, committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Krishnapur in Hagari Bommanahalli taluk on Saturday.

Crop loss and mounting debts were said to be the reason for the suicide. Mallamma, a widow, owned around five acres of land and had suffered loss of crop due to the failure of the monsoon.

She had Rs. 13 lakh as loan from two nationalised commercial banks, according to her family members.

Tambrahalli police have registered a case.

Meanwhile, Nagendra Sidramappa, a 46-year-old farmer from Ali Amber village, who had tried to commit suicide by consuming pesticide two days ago, died in a private hospital in Bidar on Saturday.

He had taken Rs. 5.5 lakh as loans from banks and cooperative societies by pledging the family jewellery. He leaves behind four daughters and a son apart from his wife.
