Three dead, two missing in Malnad region

More rains expected in Kodagu

Three people have been reported dead and two more are missing due in rain-related incidents in Chikkamagaluru district. In the adjoining Shivamogga district, a person is feared to have been washed away while another was rescued when they fell into Kumadvathi river.

In Chikkamagaluru, after a house collapsed following a landslide at Baluru Horatti near Kalasa in Mudigere taluk on Friday, a woman and her son died. The deceased have been identified as Sheshamma (64) and her son Sathish (45). In another incident, Chandre Gowda (46) of Kuduvalli in Chikkamagaluru taluk died after he slipped into Hemavati river in his farm on Friday.

Dr. Kumara, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chikkamagaluru said that two people, Srivatsa, 21, and Santhosh, 45, are missing. The former was washed away in Hemavati waters while the latter was missing after his house collapsed.

In Shivamogga district, near Choradi village, a speeding four-wheeler that came near the bridge from Shivamogga hit Amaranath(55) and Nagaraj(50), residents of nearby Kumsi village who had came there to have a glimpse of the river. Both fell into the river. Only Mr. Nagaraj could be immediately rescued.

Meanwhile, Kodagu district that saw seven deaths on Friday, continued to receive heavy rainfall. It is expected to continue for the next two days and a ‘red alert’ has been issued signalling excessive downpour until August 12. The rainfall will be in excess of 204.04 mm during a 24-hour period, according to the IMD.

Eight persons, who were feared missing from Tora village in Virajpet taluk since Friday, were still untraceable. “There is still no word about the missing persons despite intensive search operations till evening,” an official said.

Kodagu’s commercial towns Kushalnagar and Gonikoppa continue to be affected by floods.
