A number of trees in a mango orchard in Kolar district have thrown up a surprise for its owner by yielding fruits weighing a kilogram each.
Younas Sharif, a resident of Millat Nagar on the outskirts of Kolar, is the proud owner of the orchard.
Sharif cultivates mangoes on six acres in Millat Nagar. The trees started yielding fruits three years ago. However, he was in for a surprise this year when he saw the Rajgira variety of mangoes. About five trees were lush with fruits of an abnormal size. When they were weighed, he found that each fruit tipped the scale at about one kilogram.
“It’s a rare natural phenomenon. The normal weight of a Rajgira fruit is lesser than 300 grams. I am lucky to have fruits weighing a kilogram each in my orchard,” Mr. Sharif told The Hindu on Wednesday.
