This IAS officer chooses to be different

more-in

At a time when it has become common even for the “economically weak” to prefer private hospitals/nursing homes for deliveries, S.S. Nakul, an IAS officer serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ballari Zilla Panchayat, has emerged as a trend-setter by getting his wife’s maiden delivery done at the district hospital in the city.

Mr. Nakul’s wife Poojita got admitted to the district hospital on Thursday morning and delivered a male child by 9 a.m. the same day.

Both the mother and child are doing good, sources in the hospital told The Hindu. “The district hospital has experienced doctors, performing over 10 deliveries daily … the hospital has almost all the facilities and above all it is clean and tidy which made us prefer government hospital,” he told The Hindu.

Dr. Basareddi, District Surgeon, said that he had informed Mr. Nakul of the best medical services being provided to the people coming to the district hospital besides assuring him of all care needed at the time of delivery and also post-delivery.

K.C. Kondaiah, MLC, Sameer Shukla, Deputy Commissioner, R. Chetan, Superintendent of Police, and others visited the hospital and greeted the couple.

The gesture of Mr. Nakul is expected to bring the change in the perspective of the common man about government hospitals.

But whether the same kind of attention and treatment would be extended to common man, without any “influence” at the government hospitals is anybody’s guess.
