There is some good news for those who have passed pre-university or have a degree from a recognised university and are willing to explore a career in theatre and acting. The best part is students would even get a stipend.

Bengaluru Centre of the National School of Drama (NSD), an autonomous institution of the Union Ministry of Culture, and Mysuru-based Nataka Karnataka Rangayana, one and only State-owned theatre repertory in the country, are set to commence their annual theatre courses for 2015–16.

These two institutions will offer training in theatre to selected candidates besides offering stipend and hostel facility to them.

Rangayana, theatre repertory of national repute, which has taken up the tough task of combing creativity with pedagogy, has been offering a one-year diploma course for the last five years. The course is accredited by Karnataka State Open University (KSOU).

According to director of Rangayana H. Janardhan, minimum qualification to join this diploma course is pass in pre-university examination. Candidates aged between 18 and 28 may join this course. Those selected will get Rs. 2,500 a month as stipend, besides free hostel facility. Selection is purely based on the candidate’s performance in interview conducted by experts.

After completion of the course, trained candidates will get an opportunity to serve the repertory for two years as junior artistes and a fixed honorarium will be paid to them during the period. “The academic stamp bestowed on the course by the KSOU will help students in grooming their career in theatre and various emerging visual media,” said Mr. Janardhan.
