Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa announced in Belagavi on Thursday that there was no proposal before the government of dividing Belagavi district to create a new district.

He told journalists that there was no proposal before the State government to create any new district out of Belagavi. “I know there are demands for creation of smaller districts by dividing Belagavi district, as it is geographically very large. But, at present, there is no such proposal,” he said.

He was speaking after receiving a memorandum from Gokak Zilla Horata Samiti.

Later, a group of Kannada activists submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister not to consider division of the district as the interests of Kannada would be adversely affected by such a move. The activists also urged the Chief Minister to rename Bombay Karnataka as Kittur Karnataka.
