An old age home cannot be a place of choice but an inevitable shelter for those living there. Despite necessary care, shelter, food and healthcare offered at these old age homes, they are not so fortunate to find compassion, love and affection.

It is here that society can play a role to fill these gaps in different ways. One of the ways to engage them, at least for a while, is with young children.

The one-day visit of the children of KLS Public School to the Shantai Vrudhashram, an old age home situated 15 km away from the city in Peeranwadi on Jamboti Road on Wednesday, was just a step in that direction.

Compassion and empathy is what they need the most. The students, along with their teachers, spent some quality time with these senior citizens, sharing their joys and sorrows.

Students gifted towels to the aged persons and enquired about their health and returned home with blessings and advise to take care of their parents when they grow old.

This visit was a huge learning experience for the young children. On their return, the students started exploring roles to do their bit to bring smiles on the faces of senior citizens, which was exactly the purpose behind taking the children to the old aged homes.

They got first-hand experience of their responsibilities towards the senior members of society, said school principal Shalini.
