Tension prevailed in Ratnapuri village in Hunsur taluk near here on Friday after a 42-year-old resident died in police custody on Thursday evening.

Stones were hurled at policemen deployed in the village, situated at a distance of about 12 kms from Hunsur town, as people came out to protest the death of Devaraj, also known as Suresh.

Superintendent of Police Abhinav Khare, who visited the Hunsur, told reporters in Mysuru that the situation was under control.

He said the police had booked case against five policemen including sub inspector of Hunsur rural police station Lokesh in connection with the "suspicious death" of Devaraj.

The State Human Rights Commission as well as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had been intimated about the death of Devaraj.

CID takes over probe

CID has already taken over the case as all custodial deaths are probed by the agency, he added.

Hours before police took Devaraj into custody on Thursday, he and his mother had allegedly assaulted the constables who went to serve him a court warrant in connection with the maintenance case filed by his estranged wife Pankaja. Devaraj, who threatened the constables with a sickle, also set fire to the motorcycle of the police constables.

However, police returned to the village with additional forces and arrested Devaraj and his mother Chikamma. While Chikkamma was sent to judicial custody, Devaraj died later.

Meanwhile, Devaraj's brother Manjunath and Ramesh, who reached the K R Hospital mortuary in Mysuru on Friday, told reporters that they found injuries on their brother's wrists, abdomen and legs.
