Desecration of a portrait of B.R. Ambedkar in Mylandahalli in Malur taluk of Kolar district triggered tension in the area on Sunday.
The portrait on a wall in the village was smeared with cow dung after supporters of two political parties clashed on Saturday night in connection with gram panchayat elections to be held on June 2. The incident left the followers of some Dalit organisations and political parties divided.
Senior police and revenue officials, including Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Ashokkumar rushed to the spot and conducted a peace meeting involving all groups.
Balla peaceful
Meanwhile, peace returned to Balla village in Mulbagal taluk where many houses and tractors were torched following killing of Subramani, a candidate in the Balla gram panchayat election.
Subramani was brutally murdered near Mulbagal town on Thursday, and the supporters of the deceased man torched houses and tractors of their political rivals in the area the following day.
