With rumours doing the rounds and different stories emerging of a cave-like structure being discovered in a new residential layout, the Hubballi Police were on the tenterhooks on Tuesday.

After rumours stated that the cave-like structure, which was discovered on Karwar Road after a blast was triggered to make way for a road, belongs to different faiths, and self-proclaimed champions of religion coming out with their own versions, a large number of people started gathering near the spot on Tuesday leading to tension in the area.

However, the police swung into action and deployed a posse of personnel to prevent any untoward incident. They managed to disperse the crowd and also got one of the religious heads to visit the place to inspect the veracity of the different stories emerging.

Moulana Zahiruddin Kaji, who inspected the cave-like structure, said that it was not a cave at all. “It is an eight to 10 ft deep man-made structure and it is not of any religious importance,” he told presspersons.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Jinendra Khanagavi said that they had deployed the police at the spot as there were chances of vested interests exploiting the situation to instigate people.

Meanwhile, developer of the property and Congress leader Mahendra Singhi told The Hindu that he had asked the police, as a precautionary measure, to initiate steps to ensure that unauthorised persons were not allowed to enter the property as it would lead to unnecessary rumours and tension.

He said that they were developing the property after getting the required permissions from the authorities concerned. He said that he would appeal to the people not to heed to rumours being spread by vested interests.
