The Karnataka State Temperance Board favours complete Prohibition in the State and it will say so in a report to be submitted to the government soon. H.C. Rudrappa, board chairman, told presspersons here on Thursday that he is strongly recommending to the government to ban production, transportation, sales and consumption of alcohol as in Bihar. He finds Prohibition in force in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Kerala as partial and “not good enough”.
“We will submit to the government a detailed report on the issue of alcoholism in society and the economic and social problems it is causing, apart from its role in crime and law and order disturbances,” he said.
According to him, there was something fundamentally wrong about the idea of the government earning money from alcohol business. The entry of Mysore Sales International Limited into alcohol business has achieved the stated objective of bringing transparency in the trade to a great extent. The work of the board is also creating awareness against alcohol consumption. Mr. Rudrappa also finds a “rising distaste for alcohol among the present generation”. He felt that the opinion of MLAs was the key in this issue and if they willed, it would be introduced in a day, he said.
