A teacher was kidnapped in front of her school in broad daylight in Bidar on Saturday.

Ashwini (27), an assistant teacher in the GND School, was kidnapped by a few people who put her in a sports utility vehicle and sped away. Eyewitness accounts said there was a considerable crowd in front of the school, including staff and parents who came to drop their children, but none rushed to help her.

Her father, Prabhakar Wagle, has complained to the police that her estranged husband, Vijay Kumar Ambalagikar, had kidnapped her, along with four of his associates. “They are cruel. They will kill her,” the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Ashwini was a Dalit girl who was married to Vijay Kumar who hailed from a different caste. They had eloped and married in 2010. They had no children and Vijay Kumar married again, without divorcing Ashwini. Vijay Kumar, who headed a pro-Kannada organisation, was involved in a counterfeit currency transaction a few years ago. He also served among the personal staff of a former MP, her father told the police.

Vijay Kumar’s father Ramesh and mother Chitra are in judicial custody on charges of trying to set Ashwini on fire a few months ago. Vijay Kumar is absconding.

Sudhir Kumar Reddy, SP, said they had got some vital clues and the investigation was on track.
