A school teacher, who was kidnapped in front of her school here on Saturday morning, was rescued by the police within 12 hours of the incident.

Ashwini, 27, an assistant teacher in GND school, was allegedly kidnapped by her estranged husband Vijay Kumar Ambalagikar and his associates near the school around 8 a.m. Acting on a set of clues, Bidar police rescued her near the Karnataka-Telangana border around 7 p.m.

The police said that she was put her in a sports utility vehicle by a group of people. Eyewitness accounts said though there was a considerable crowd before the school, including staff and parents who came to drop their children, no one helped her.

Later, her father Prabhakar Wagle lodged a complaint with the police that Vijay Kumar had kidnapped her along with four of his associates.

“They are cruel. They will kill her,” the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Ashwini was a Dalit and Vijay Kumar hailed from a different caste. They had eloped and married in 2010.

They did not have children and Vijay Kumar married again without divorcing Ashwini. Vijay Kumar, who headed a Kannada organisation, was involved in a counterfeit currency transaction a few years ago.

He also served among the personal staff of the former MP N. Dharam Singh, her father told the police.

Vijay Kumar’s father Ramesh and mother Chitra are in judicial custody on charges of trying to set Ashwini on fire a few months ago. Vijay Kumar is absconding.
