Surveillance cameras are likely to guard the statues of Sri Chamarajendra Wadiyar and Sri Krishnarajendra Wadiyar here. This move comes in the wake of damages made to a portion of Sri Chamarajendra Wadiyar’s statue recently.

The repeated acts of defacement to the statue either by damaging or taking away the sword had upset the locals who sought proper security to the statues, considering their importance and the contributions made by the late Maharajas.

On the instructions of the Department of Archaeology and Museums, a local artisan, Ibrahim, crafted the sword, measuring about 26 inches, using a single piece of marble stone and fixed it on the statue.

“The marble sword was replaced on Tuesday. It cost about Rs. 8,000. A watchman has been posted to keep guard of the statue in the night following the incident,” said C.G. Betsurmath, who is holding the additional charge as the Commissioner of Archaeology and Museums, Mysore.

Mr. Betsurmath, who is the Commissioner of Mysore City Corporation, told The Hindu that he had spoken to Police Commissioner M.A. Saleem on the need for increasing security to the places of heritage importance, including the statues of the Mysore kings here.

“If necessary, surveillance cameras will be installed for safeguarding the statues. A decision on measures for the security of the statues will be taken after another round of discussion with the Police Commissioner,” Mr. Betsurmath said.

It was the second time this year that unidentified miscreants had resorted to vandalising a portion of the statue.

The Ursu Mandali Sangha had condemned the incident and taken exception to lack security for the statue of a king who laid the foundation for modern Mysore.
